PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS WIN THE ANNUAL ENVIRONMENT CONTEST

The encouragement prize goes to Pedago

Each year, the Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs is organizing a contest for the Student Union’s suborganizations: which organization is the most considerate towards the environment? This year, Stimulus, the subject organization of psychology students, have triumphed. Ville Niskanen, who has been in charge of the organization’s environmental considerations has been injecting green values in all the events and announcements of Stimulus. The organization has, for example, favored responsibly produced vegetarian food, taken good care of recycling, gone dumpster diving and cooked vegan food together. JYY congratulates the winners and awards them with 200 €. Class teacher students of Pedago also receive an encouraging 50 € for improving their environmental sensibilities.

For more information, contact: The Chair of the Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs, Aino Sirén | aino.siren@gmail.com

GREAT NEW YEAR RESOLUTION: MAKE YOUR ORGANIZATION MORE ECO-SAVVY!

Environment contest of 2012 is already starting up!

The organizations can once again compete in eco-friendliness between December 1, 2011 and October 30, 2012. The annual environment contest is the Student Union’s way of encouraging its suborganizations to take the environment into account in all of their activities. All the organizations that meet the environmental criteria are awarded with an eco-label, and the greenest organization receives a prize of 200 euros from the Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs. The organization that makes most improvements to its eco-ways is recognized with an encouragement prize of 50 euros. The environmental administrators of the organizations should read the rules carefully and keep them in mind throughout the year!

Tuesday November 29, 7 pm, Student House Ilokivi

Sergio Leone’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (1966) is a true heavyweight amongst classic western movies. The film is built around money bags that were stolen from the Confederation in the confusion of American Civil War and then fought over by three very different gun-slingers. The almost three-hour film is nicely restored and outfitted with digital sounds that allow Ennio Morricone’s legendary soundtrack grow to its full bloom. The doors open at 6.30 pm and the theater bar is open throughout the viewing. Tickets: 5 € for students, 6 € for everyone else. Or buy a season ticket (good for six months and six films) for 25€/30€.

SHED THE STRESS ON WELFARE WEEK

http://jyy.fi/hyvinvointi

The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä is spending week 47 with their mind on different welfare issues. During the week, there are several free events that will help you to maintain your health and happiness. JYY is organizing the theme week in cooperation with the FSHS and University Sports.

PROGRAM:

TRY UNIVERSITY SPORTS FOR FREE THIS WEEK! (November 21 – 25)
As usual, Welfare Week is also a free week in University Sports. Go ahead and sample the supervised exercise classes in fitness, health and dance! Sports stickers are not required this week!

EXPLORE VIRTUAL EXERCISING
Tuesday November 22, 5 – 7 pm, Bar Launch (Väinönkatu 9, the entrance of Terveystalo, 2nd floor)
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a game controller? In a number of sporty console games, you can realize this! Try out Kinect Sports and other dance and exercise games at Bar Launch! The event is free for the students of the University of Jyväskylä.

JOG WITH THE SPORTS ADVISORS
Sunday November 27, 3 pm
The sports advisors of the University are taking winter weary students for a jog! The starting point is in the harbor, on the Lutakko side of Kuokkala Bridge. You decide your pace yourself.

GREET YOUR FELLOW STUDENT VILLAGERS

Say hi!

Kortepohja Student Village participates in Welfare Week by campaigning for good neighbourliness. Encountering familiar faces should cheer you up and make you feel safe. Student Village is a community, so say hi to your neighbours wherever you encounter them – in the stairs, in an elevator, in the hallway or outside. Simple gestures like this are a great basis for courtesy and tolerance.

BUYERS AND SELLERS: WELCOME TO JYY’S FLEAMARKET!

Saturday November 26, 11 am – 2 pm, Cafeteria Ilokivi

Come to browse and discover bargains at the Student Union’s flea market next Saturday! Or, if there’s unnecessary stuff filling your closets and blocking your hallways, there’s still room for a few sellers! Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs is organizing the event and treating the visitors for coffee and small snacks. Reserve your stand and check the details on Korppi (search for “jyykirppis”).

Further information: Kai Ylinen | kai.e.ylinen@student.jyu.fi & Nina Kolehmainen | nina.j.kolehmainen@student.jyu.fi

MORE SWAPPING, LESS BUYING

Thursday November 24, 10 am – 2 pm, lobby area of the main building (building C on Seminaarinmäki Campus)

To celebrate the annual Buy Nothing Day, student organizations for education students are setting up a big exchange market in the University main building. The event is organized in cooperation with Friends of the Earth Finland and the Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs – and it is open for everyone. The idea is to urge all the students and organizations to consider their attitudes towards consumerism and recycling. Is the new one always the best one? Put it to a test: bring with you all the stuff you don’t really need and all the clothes you never wear and see if anyone else wants them. You are welcome to browse and take what other swappers have for offer whether you give stuff away or not. Remember that all your offerings should be in good shape! You can drop your swappables to the coat racks of building C before the event, as long as you mark clearly that they are meant for the market. Everything that doesn’t get adopted will be delivered to a recycling center.

Exchange Market on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=318240758191596

MASCULINE BEAUTY FROM MATHEMATICIANS

Physics, maths and IT students take it off

Laestadius, a priest from Northern Sweden, is best known for the revivalist movement he started, but he was also an enthusiastic amateur botanist. During his lifetime, he managed to collect such a big collection of plants that it has proved an invaluable tool for understanding and recognizing the flora of the North. The exhibition includes 30 botanical pictures from Laestadius’ collection as well as some of his original plant samples. These specimen are so fragile that they can usually be viewed only by experts. Tickets: students 2€, others 4€; free admission on Fridays.
