The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä advocates the students’ rights to best possible studying conditions on and off campus. The aim is to improve to quality of education and study counseling as well as the quality of living. In addition, the Union sees to that the basic student rights and duties are respected.
If students face problems with completing their studies, the Secretary of Academic Affairs is the best person to contact. He can take counsel, ensure that the student is treated according to students’ rights and contact the university staff or administration on behalf of the student. If your problem concerns a certain faculty or department, you can also seek help from an appropriate subject association or student representative.
Even within the university, the Student Union is a mouthpiece for students on several different levels. This is achieved by cooperating with student representatives, subject associations and university staff. JYY also represents the student body in many administrative organs and working groups. Note that any regular student can participate in the decision-making of the university administration by becoming a student representative.
JYY supervises the interests of students locally, nationally and internationally as well. On local level, this means affecting the municipal politics of the city of Jyväskylä. Larger impact can be achieved by cooperating with other student unions, National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and European Students’ Union (ESU).
