The subcommittees of the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä are open student groups that gather approximately once a month. In these gatherings the committees discuss the issues of their specific fields of interest – and have a little fun on the side.

The subcommittees are much more relaxed than their fancy names suggest. So, take heart and give them a try! There are no perquisites for attending a meeting; the chair and the secretary of the committee will steer the discussion in a constructive direction. The best way to learn about the upcoming meetings and other activities is to join the subcommittees’ mailing lists.

Subcommittee for Academic Affairs

The Subcommittee for Academic Affairs strives for improving the overall studying conditions and the students’ standing in the university politics. The subcommittee is both a discussion forum and a way of distributing information about current issues. In addition, it prepares public statements and organizes events. Some of the highlights of the year are Free Education Day, the joint fall excursion to Helsinki and the Complaining Weeks, which is a kind of feedback drive for students. The subcommittee also gives out the “Good Teacher” prize, issued annually by the University Foundation.

Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs

The Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs looks over the environmental effects of the Student Union’s actions. Its goals are to maintain a friendly relationship with the surrounding nature, stir discussion and build positive attitudes towards the environment. These are achieved by preparing public statements as well as by organizing drives and excursions. Furthermore, the subcommittee helps students to lead more environmentally friendly lives by offering them opportunities to farm their own garden patches, to maintain their bicycles and to buy affordable organic food. Many of JYY’s flea markets are organized by the Subcommittee for Environmental Affairs.

Subcommittee for Development Cooperation

This is a group for everyone interested in improving the living conditions in developing countries. The Subcommittee for Development Cooperation educates students about development aid, shows movies about the subject and organizes awareness drives, such as the Development Cooperation Week. What’s more, they support and follow the Student Union’s own development project in Rajasthan, India. The project kicked off in 2010. Its purpose is to encourage the schooling of children, to raise the women’s awareness of their own rights and to empower the entire village. The students can help funding the project by buying development cooperation lunches in Cafeteria Ilokivi or by adding a voluntary development cooperation fee to the total sum whenever they pay their membership fee to the Student Union. Recreational Subcommittee of Kortepohja Student Village (KVAT)

The Recreational Subcommittee of Kortepohja Student Village focuses on bringing the fun where it is most desperately needed – right on your backyard. The Committee is mostly comprised of the residents of the Student Village, but all its clubs and events are open for all the members of the Student Union. Its presence in Kortepohja is made obvious by the numerous courses, concerts, theme nights and clubs it runs and arranges. So far, there is an art club, a crafts club, a role playing club, a board game club and a writers’ club. KVAT also has an arsenal of tools and equipment the residents of the Student Village are welcome to rent or borrow. It’s an easy way to get your hands on a sewing machine, a power drill, a hand blender or a boat, just to name a few. Getting into the Subcommittee is even easier: just show up to a meeting.
