What is Student Union?

JYY stands for the Finnish words meaning the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä. It is an interest group and a service organization dedicated exclusively to the students of the University of Jyväskylä. It dates back to 1934, when the student union of the College of Education was founded.

Each undergraduate and graduate student in the University of Jyväskylä must join JYY by paying a membership fee. The most important task of the Student Union is to advocate the rights and interests of the students at the university and in the society at large. The students may contact the employees of the Union should they have any problems concerning student life.

The heart of the Student Union is Student House Ilokivi. Designed by the world-famous architect Alvar Aalto, Ilokivi was built in the middle of Seminaarinmäki Campus in 1964. Within its walls are the offices of the JYY employees and the union-owned luncheonette Ilokivi. Downstairs, there is a multi-functional community space, which serves, for example as a small movie theater, Kampus Kino. Many of JYY’s events, parties and concerts take place there as well as the performances of the university’s own student theater, JYT.

During the acedemic year 2015-16, Student Union Building Ilokivi is under renovation and the JYY offices are temporarily located in Gummeruksenkatu 6 (2nd floor).

Adjacent to the student house, there is Opinkivi. There you can find, for example, the editorial offices of the student newspaper as well as the excellent sauna and conference quarters of the Student Union, which are also available for rent.

All the decisions in the Student Union are made openly and democratically. The most important ones are made by the Council of Representatives, which is elected every second year by the votes of the students. The Council appoints a Board of Executives, which is responsible for the smaller everyday issues.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the more and less official activities of the Student Union. The easiest way to join in are the eight subcommittees, open student groups that organize events and provide an open forum for discussing current issues of their respective fields of interest.

JYY is a member of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), which supervises the interests of university students on the national level. It communicates the opinions of students to politicians and other decision-makers to affect educational politics and improve the welfare of students all over Finland. For endeavors concerning university sports, there is a separate organization called Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL). Through their membership in JYY, the students of the University of Jyväskylä are members of SYL and OLL as well. Thus, a part of the collected membership fees is used to fund these organizations.

The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä is also the owner of Kortepohja Student Village and the student apartments on Vehkakuja.
