Celebration of Whole Nation’s Costumes
2.12.2017 @ 08:00 - 17:00 | Free
Welcome to the Celebration of Whole Nation’s Costumes on Saturday 2.12. at Craft Museum of Finland
The Craft Museum of Finland celebrates 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence by organizing the Celebration of Whole Nation’s Costumes on Saturday 2nd of December at 3-6 pm and invites everyone to join the party. The participants in the costume party are requested to dress up in festive outfit in which they feel comfortable. Organized in co-operation with Multicultural Center Gloria and museum’s volunteers, Museum Companions, the event highlights the diversity of Finnishness.
In the Celebration of Whole Nation’s Costumes, you will be received by the museum director Simo Kotilainen and Gloria Lapitan from Multicultural Center Gloria. During the evening, the main role is given to costumes in all its forms; we Finns are born today in so many countries that the costumes get their influence from all over the world. The celebrants are encouraged to get acquainted with the costumes of other participants – for once you are encouraged to focus on what other people are wearing! During the evening, it is also possible to get photographed by a professional photographer Roi Peteri.
Maritta Stoor-Lehtonen, who will enchant us with Lapland’s “joiku”, and Armas Hagert’s seldom-heard Romany songs, will provide part of the evening’s music. In addition, danceable music is provided. There will be a Happiness Wall, in which you can record things in that you have succeeded this year, what has made you happy or how you have made someone else happy.
A sale pop-up for “vanhojentanssi” gowns will be held at the museum, which will give the opportunity to hunt for a new home for your gown from the ball of the seniors, that is forgotten in the closet or to find the perfect gown for your up-coming ball in the spring. You can register your gown for the pop-up by taking a picture of your dress and attaching it to an email that tells us whether the dress is for sale or rent, as well as price and contact information. The museum prints these “adverts” with the pictures on the dress wall of the party, from which interested people can contact them. Another option is to wear the gown and attend the party! You get a pin from the museum so that the potential buyer can recognize that your dress is for sale.
The event is organized with the help of volunteers in co-operation with the Multicultural Center Gloria and Museum Companions. In the event planning, we sought communities and individuals earlier this autumn. In the very successful planning meeting, the event was visualised with the help of Travel to the Future method. The method used encouraged the planners to imagine what it was like participate in the Celebration of Whole Nation’s Costumes festivities and describe it in writing. The evening program was completely brainstormed during the planning meeting, and we found a volunteer producer for the festivities in Jenna Korpela, a student at the University of Applied Sciences. Museum Companions will be involved in the evening by assisting in arrangements, and act as lounge hostesses and hosts.
The event is part of the Joulukylä Jyväskylä package. See other Christmas events at: https://visitjyvaskyla.fi/joulu
