JYY supports the academic boycott of Israel. The Representative Council discussed the matter at its meeting on March 5 and approved the content of the petition submitted to the Student Union by Free Palestine JKL.
JYY’s position is that the university must bear its share of global responsibility by actively participating in the discussion regarding international crises. The University of Jyväskylä should only collaborate with companies and organizations that operate responsibly and respect human rights.
JYY demands the University of Jyväskylä:
- To end its cooperation with Bar-Ilan University
- To make an unambiguous decision stating that no faculty or department may cooperate with Israeli universities or institutions in accordance with the guidelines of PACBI
- … including a university-level policy on the participation of Israeli institutions in the EU’s Horizon Europe research projects.
In its international activities, the university must be aware of its global responsibility, taking into account international situations and crises. The university’s international activities must be ethical, sustainable, and respectful of human rights.
In January 2024, the JYY Board approved an earlier petition drafted by Free Palestine JKL regarding the academic boycott of Israel.
