Sports Appro 2025

The Sports Appro event organized by the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY) will be held this year on October 20–21. At Sports Appro, higher education students in Jyväskylä can collect performance points for their appropasses by participating in sports trials in different parts of Jyväskylä.

Appropass, registration for sport trials, and Kide.app

Tickets for the event are sold on Kide.app, where you first purchase a Sports Appro membership. Once you have purchased your membership, you can register for sports trials.

The sports trials are listed as different ticket types under the separate Liikunta-appro 2025 event. All sports trials require advance registration, which is done by making a sports trial reservation on Kide.app.

Stamps are collected on a paper appropass. The appropass is shown to the instructor of the trial session, and you will receive a stamp in your pass. You can redeem an event overall badge by completing at least one trial session.

Ticket/membership sales will begin on Kide.app on September 15, and reservations/registration for the trials will begin on October 1.

Instructions for picking up your appropass:

  • You can pick up a paper appropass from the JYY member service point on October 8-16, Mon, Wed, Thu 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The JYY member service point is located in the Student House Ilokivi (Keskussairaalantie 2) next to the main doors on the right. There is a Service Point sign on the ceiling above the door to the service point.
  • Paper appropasses are also available from the lobby of Student House Ilokivi between October 20 and 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Instructions for picking up your overall badge:

  • This year, you need one stamp to complete the appro! You can get your overall badge by showing your appropass’ completion stamp.
  • You can pick up your overall badge from the lobby of Student House Ilokivi between October 20 and 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • After October 21, you can pick up your overall badge at the JYY member service point during its opening hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. until October 30. The JYY member service point is located at Student House Ilokivi (Keskussairaalantie 2), to the right of the main doors. There is a sign saying ‘Palvelupiste / Service Point’ on the ceiling above the door to the service point.

Insurances and safety

We want Sports Appro to be an enjoyable event for everyone and to inspire people to try different sports. It is important that you follow the instructions and act according to your own abilities when trying out different sports. Participants are responsible for assessing their health before participating in the event. Do not participate in the event if you have flu symptoms, are ill, or are under the influence of intoxicants.

Accident insurance has been taken out for the event. More detailed information about the insurance can be found below.

For member of JYY (Student Union JYY)

JYY student members are covered by accident insurance provided by the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL), which covers accidents involving members of the organization under certain conditions.

The insurance does not cover the following sports/activities:

For member of JAMKO (Student Union JAMKO)

All JAMK students with active JAMKO membership are covered by SAMOK accident insurance. The insurance covers everything except extreme sports. So, if you study at JAMK but are not a member of JAMKO, unfortunately you do not have accident insurance provided by the event organizer, but are participating at your own risk.

If you are not a member of the Jyväskylä University Student Union (JYY) or the Student Union at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences JAMKO, please check how your own or university or student union covers the sports you participate in.

Sport Trials: Monday 20.10.

You can book a spot for trying out different sports through the Kide.app event starting on October 1, 2025. Please note that you must have a Sports Appro 2025 membership in order to make reservations for trying out different sports. Each person can book three trial sessions. There are a limited number of trial sessions available.

Ready Set Pole: Pole dancing
Mon 20 Oct at 2:15–3:00 p.m.

Description: Pole dancing is a spectacular sport and form of exercise that is suitable for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. Pole dancing develops muscles and body control, and upper body strength in particular develops quickly with practice! The trial class will cover various easy spins and static moves, such as sitting on the pole.

Equipment: short shorts (you can wear long pants over them at the beginning of the class), a small towel, a water bottle, long hair tied back, skin free of lotions/oils, no jewelry, no shoes during class

Location and directions: Cygnaeuksenkatu 3, 40100 Jyväskylä. We are located near the City Library (same building as Yliopistopaino). The outer door is on the courtyard/parking lot side, from where you take the stairs up to the second floor.

uMove: Flow Yoga
Mon 20 Oct, 8:30–9:25 a.m.

Description: Flow yoga consists of flowing movements that improve mobility and balance and strengthen the body. The different variations offered in the class allow you to tailor the exercises to suit yourself and your own feelings. This makes the class suitable for both beginners and those who have been practicing yoga for longer.

Equipment: Bring indoor exercise clothes, a water bottle, and a small towel. You can also bring socks and something warm to wear for the calmer part of the class. You do not need to bring your own equipment to the class. Pick up the equipment you need for the class from the sports equipment storage room L149. The instructor will write on the board next to the storage room what you need to bring to the class.

Location and directions: Sports Hall (Keskussairaalantie 4, 40600 Jyväskylä) Enter through the main doors of the Sports Building. Go straight ahead and you will find the gyms, changing rooms, lockers, and equipment storage room along the corridor. Please arrive on time, at least 10 minutes before the class starts.

uMove: Strong Legs
Mon 20 Oct at 4:15–4:40 p.m.

Description: Strengthen your lower body! Strong Legs is a short but effective lower body workout that strengthens the muscles in the lower body in a variety of ways. The exercises are done at your own pace, and you can choose the weights and versions of the exercises that suit you, so you can participate in the class whether you are a beginner or an experienced exerciser. This short workout is perfect for a busy day and is great on its own, but it can also be combined with the Strong Arms class.

Equipment: Bring indoor sportswear, indoor shoes, a water bottle, and a sweat towel. You do not need to bring your own equipment to the class. The equipment needed for the class can be found in the JAMK Sport Hall.

Location and directions: JAMK Sport Hall (Rajakatu 35, 40200 Jyväskylä) Please arrive on time, at least 10 minutes before the class starts. The entrance is through JAMK’s main doors D1. The changing rooms are located on the ground floor of the building, and from the changing rooms you can access the gym on the 2nd floor via a staircase. There are lockable storage lockers in front of the changing rooms.

uMove: Strong Arms
Mon 20 Oct at 4:45–5:10 p.m.

Description: Strengthen your upper body! Strong Arms is a short but effective workout that strengthens the muscles of the upper body in a variety of ways. The exercises are done at your own pace, and you can choose the weights that suit you, so you can participate in the class whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete. This short workout is perfect for a busy day and is great on its own, but it can also be combined with the Strong Legs class.

Equipment: Bring indoor sportswear, indoor shoes, a water bottle, and a sweat towel. You do not need to bring your own equipment to the class. The equipment needed for the class can be found in the JAMK Sport Hall.

Location and directions: JAMK Sport Hall (Rajakatu 35, 40200 Jyväskylä) Please arrive on time, at least 10 minutes before the class starts. The entrance is through JAMK’s main doors D1. Ready Set Pole: Ring Trapeze
Mon 20 Oct at 3:15–4:00 p.m.

Description: In the ring trapeze class, you will perform tricks in the air using a ring. Here you can train your body control and strengthen your muscles in a fun way! In the trial class, you will learn how to get on the hoop and practice a few basic tricks.

Equipment: long pants, small towel, water bottle, long hair tied back, no jewelry, no shoes during class

Location and directions: Cygnaeuksenkatu 3, 40100 Jyväskylä. You can find us near the City Library (same building as Yliopistopaino). The outer door is on the courtyard/parking lot side, from where you take the stairs up to the second floor.

Mukwan: Taekwondo
Mon 20 Oct at 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Description: Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that technically consists mainly of blocks, punches, and kicks. As a versatile form of exercise and sport, taekwondo improves the participant’s fitness, coordination, mobility, and body control. In addition to learning the techniques of the sport, participants also learn to respect others and follow good manners.

Equipment: Light indoor sports clothes.

Location and directions: Lohikosken koulu (Haavikkotie 4, 40250 Jyväskylä)

Accessibility: The hall is not wheelchair accessible; access is only via stairs. If you have a disability but are interested in trying taekwondo, please contact the Liikunta-app coordinator by email at liikunta-appro@jyy.fi.

Sisu Paraicehockey: Para ice hockey
Mon 20 Oct at 6:30–9:05 p.m.

Description: In this para ice hockey trial, you can experience what it feels like to play on ice in a sled and challenge yourself in a whole new way!

Equipment: At a minimum, a helmet with a visor, gloves, and elbow pads. Chest protector, neck guard, and knee pads are also recommended.

Location and arrival instructions: BUUGI (Sykeraitti 7-9, 40630 Jyväskylä) Training takes place from 7:35 p.m. to 9:05 p.m. at Buugi. Participants should arrive at the hall at 6:30 p.m. to check their equipment and receive an introduction to the sport.

Jaguars Spirit Athletes: Cheerleading
Mon Oct 20 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Description: Cheerleading is a fast-paced and spectacular team sport. Cheerleading is a
truly versatile sport, and trying it out allows you to challenge yourself in a very special way. The sport includes acrobatics, tosses, pyramids, and lifts. The content of the trial session will be adapted to the participants’ skill level.

Equipment: Please wear athletic clothing, indoor shoes, bring a water bottle, and come with a cheerful and courageous attitude! It is advisable to remove jewelry for the duration of the class and tie up long hair.

Location and directions: JSA Cheer Gym (Pääskyntie 4, 40320 Jyväskylä). Enter through the main door of the hall.

Jyväskylä Figure Skating Club: Figure skating
Mon 20 Oct at 8:30–9:15 p.m.

Description: Figure skating is, at its best, a combination of sport and art – it allows you to develop your fitness, skills, and expression in a variety of ways while learning how to move on ice. You can start figure skating at any age, and you can practice it as an individual or team sport in our club. Come and learn about figure skating and try it out under the guidance of our professional coaches!

During the trial session, you will learn the basics of moving on ice and try out elements of both individual and synchronized skating. Before the trial session (7–8:30 p.m.), the club will hold a program review, where participants are welcome to watch performances of solo and formation skating competition programs before the trial!

Equipment: You can participate in the demo wearing comfortable clothes that will keep you warm. Overalls are fine! You can wear a helmet if you wish; the club has about 10 helmets available for loan. It is a good idea to bring your own skates, as the club only has a few pairs of adult figure skates available for loan.

Location and directions: Hippos Ice Rink (LähiTapiola Arena) (Rautpohjankatu 10, 40700 Jyväskylä)

Accessibility: With a minor disability, such as visual or physical impairment, or with your own assistant, and if you have the necessary equipment, there are no obstacles to participation. The hall’s stands are accessible through the A4 door, but access to the rink itself is not designed to be barrier-free. However, this can be achieved, for example, through the ice machine hatch.

Jyväskylä Dance Institute: Contemporary Dance Beginners
Mon 20 Oct at 7:45–8:45 p.m.

Description: Contemporary dance is a versatile and expressive dance form that combines fluid movement, body control, and creative self-expression. In the beginners’ class, you will learn the basic movements of dance, the dynamics of movement, and improvisation in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere. No previous dance experience is necessary—an open mind and curiosity are enough!

Equipment: Come to the class wearing comfortable, flexible clothing that is easy to move in – for example, sweatpants, leggings, or sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Location and directions: Jyväskylä Dance Academy dance studios, Vapaudenkatu 48-50. Studio 4. Studio 4 is accessed from the back of the building, on the ground floor.

Jyväskylä Dance Institute: Argentine tango (beginners)
Mon 20 October, 8:15–9:15 p.m.

Description: Are you ready to step into the magic of dance? Argentine tango is known for its beautiful movements and interaction between partners. In this beginner’s class, you will try out the basic steps of tango and learn how to move together with your partner to the beat of the music. No previous experience is necessary – just come with an open mind and a willingness to try!

Equipment: Come to the class wearing comfortable, flexible clothing that is easy to move in – for example, sweatpants, leggings, or sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Location and directions: Jyväskylä Dance School dance studios, Vapaudenkatu 48-50. Studio 6. Studio 6 is accessed from the rear of the building, at street level on Vapaudenkatu (1st floor).

Roundnet Jyväskylä: Roundnet
Mon 20 Oct at 9:00–10:00 p.m.

Description: What is roundnet? Roundnet is a sport played 2v2 around a small circular net. Each team has three touches to get the ball into the net. After that, it is the other team’s turn to try to keep the ball in play and get it back over the net with three touches. The sport could be compared to beach volleyball, but instead of hitting the ball over the net, it is hit through the net to the opponents. In roundnet, the playing area is a full 360° around the net, so there are no actual sides. This allows for very creative attacks in any direction.

Equipment: Wear comfortable, athletic clothing.

Visually Impaired People of Central Finland: Blind Table Tennis
Mon Oct 20 at 9:00–11:00 a.m.

Description: Blind table tennis is a fast-paced and exciting sport that was originally developed for visually impaired people, but is suitable for everyone! The game uses a ball with a bell inside and eye masks, putting all players on an equal footing. The aim is to hit the ball into your opponent’s goal on a low table with raised edges – reaction speed, listening skills, and quick reflexes are key.

During the trial, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of blind ping pong and challenge your senses in a new way. This sport offers an experience that is both fun and enlightening.

Equipment: You do not need your own equipment; eye protection and game equipment will be provided on site. Wear comfortable indoor clothing and indoor shoes (not mandatory). The game is fast-paced and the ball makes a loud noise, so be prepared for a noisy environment.

Location and directions: KSN premises (Eeronkatu 7 B19, 40720 Jyväskylä) Ring the doorbell and wait for the door to be opened. The game table is located at the bottom of the steep stairs, immediately to the left as you enter the front door.

Visually Impaired People of Central Finland: Blind Table Tennis

Tue 21 Oct at 2:15–3:00 p.m.

Description: In the fabric acrobatics class, you will perform tricks using a fabric suspended at hip height. Here you can train your body control, grip strength, and mobility in a fun way! The trial class will focus on climbing and various easy tricks and spins.

Equipment: long pants and a long-sleeved shirt (a T-shirt is also acceptable), a water bottle, long hair tied back without pins, no jewelry, and no shoes during class.

Ready Set Pole: Aerial Yoga
Tue 21 Oct at 3:15–4:00 p.m.

Description: In aerial yoga classes, yoga exercises are performed on a cloth suspended at hip height. Aerial yoga helps you develop body control and open up knots in your body! In this trial class, we will explore different asanas, or yoga poses, at a gentle pace using the fabric, and we will also try inversions, or headstands.

Equipment: Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt (a T-shirt is also fine), a water bottle, long hair tied back without pins, no jewelry, and no shoes during the class.

Liikunnan Riemu Sopulit: Light trail running
Tue 21 Oct at 5:00–6:00 p.m.

Description: Join us for an atmospheric autumn run by headlamp. This is a low-threshold trail run with an autumn twist, organized by the Liikunnan Riemu experience and adventure sports section.

The activity may be challenging for people with visual or physical disabilities, so please register according to your own abilities.

Equipment: Bring good running shoes, preferably with good grip, and your own headlamp or flashlight; a phone flashlight will also work. There’s room for all your friends to join our group!

Jyväskylä Dance Institute: House (basic)
Tue 21 Oct at 6:30–7:45 p.m.

Description: House dance is an energetic and joyful street dance style that gets your heart pumping and puts a smile on your face! In this class, you will learn the basic steps, rhythm, and groove of house dance in a relaxed atmosphere. The class is suitable for everyone—no previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm to try something new!

Equipment: Come to the class wearing comfortable, flexible clothing that is easy to move in – for example, sweatpants, leggings, or sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Jyväskylä Dance Institute: Jumps & Turns
Tue 21 October, 8:00–9:00 p.m.

Description: As the name suggests, this class focuses on jumps and pirouettes in dance. The teaching emphasizes technique, body control, and expression – suitable for those who already have some dance experience. The Jumps & Turns class offers an opportunity to refine your movement quality and learn new skills in a fast-paced but goal-oriented environment.

Equipment: Come to class in comfortable, flexible clothing that is easy to move in, such as sweatpants, leggings, or sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Location and directions: Jyväskylä Dance Institute dance studios, Vapaudenkatu 48-50. Studio 5. Studio 5 is accessed from the back of the building, at street level on Vapaudenkatu (1st floor).

Jyväskylän Seudun Avantouimarit: Cold Swimming
Tue 21 Oct at 11.00 a.m. – 13.00 p.m.

Description: The October lake might be chilly, but that’s exactly the charm of cold water swimming! It’s more than just taking a dip – it’s a full experience. Imagine the crisp autumn air, the clear lakeside scenery, and the refreshing bite of the water on your skin. Even though the lake isn’t frozen yet, the October water will surely wake up your body and mind. After the swim, you’ll feel lighter, energized, and many even describe a euphoric rush of happiness.

Equipment: There are changing rooms, toilets, and a pier for entering the lake. There is no sauna on the beach. Bring a swimsuit, towel, warm clothes, and possibly a warm drink to keep you warm after the refreshing swim.
