The Student Union JYY will build a new housing location in the cosy, central Mäki-Matti district. Two blocks of flats will be built in the new Korttelikylä location with the total built apartment area of approx. 3 800 m2. These two JYY buildings come with 158 apartments, 142 of which will be studios and 16 two-room apartments. The application round for the apartments will take place in the future, with lots of footage in the channels of the business unit of JYY.
Construction begins in the autumn 2020 – ready for tenants in the summer of 2022
The planning phase included in the contract starts right away with the target to start the construction at the site in the autumn of 2020. The tenants will get to move into the new location in the summer of 2022. The construction is carried out as a design-and-build contract with the Pohjola Rakennus Suomi Oy construction company. The architectural planning will be carried out by Inaro Oy.
JYY aims for a highly sustainable construction project
The Student Union JYY has high goals with the Korttelikylä project. The new housing location is expected to provide its tenants with the highest possible standard of living close to the university campuses and everyday services but with a decent price level. The apartments are compact but unique: the top floor of the gabled buildings consists of lofty studios with a comfy gallery. According to its business strategy, the Student Union JYY follows the sustainable development framework: for example, the location will meet the standards of the best energy saving class (A) and its tenants will be encouraged to lead a car-free life with good bike-storage facilities.
Inclusive planning methods in use regarding the common spaces
The Korttelikylä tenants will also be sharing a community space with different kinds of possibilities. It will be carried out with the Student Housing Association of Central Finland KOAS, who is also building their own blocks of flats in the Korttelikylä location. The design of the common spaces is underway and ideas from the future users – tenants and students – have been collected in April via surveys and social media content.
