In the university community there are plenty of cultural activities. These are organized by the Student Union and the university itself, but also by numerous independent hobby clubs and student groups. In the Student Union, a wide selection of cultural activities is maintained by the Secretary of Cultural Affairs and the active Subcommittee for Cultural Affairs.

Student House Ilokivi

One of the cultural centers of the campus is Student House Ilokivi. Many events take place there throughout the year, like Jyrock (festival), different clubs and parties. Ilokivi is also home to the University’s own student theater, JYT, and Kampus kino movies series.

Kampus Kino

Kampus Kino brings movies close to the students. Kampus kino is organized by the active Subcommittee for Cultural Affairs. Tickets cost only 6 Euros for students and 8 Euros for non-students.

Jyrock is the oldest indie music festival in Finland. It is also a legendary indoor festival, which has been organized by the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä since 1985. The festival concentrates on Finnish and foreign indie music, and it is especially known for its open-minded attitude towards new and underground music. Different bands rock the stage each spring in Student House Ilokivi.

Student Newspaper

The Student Newspaper of the University of Jyväskylä – nicknamed Jylkkäri – is the Student Union’s own local newspaper and a public mouthpiece for students. The paper is available for free around the three campus areas and in a couple of spots downtown. Alternately, you can become a subscriber. A new issue is published every month during fall and spring semesters and the news and articles of the paper mostly touch on student life, culture, sports and politics. One section is reserved especially for foreign students.

All students are more than welcome to contribute by sending their feedback, comments and story ideas to the editors. The Student Newspaper is also on a constant lookout for new writers from columnists to news editors. If there’s a small journalist dwelling inside you, contact the Editor-in-Chief. All contributors receive a small compensation for their efforts.
