Get involved
The role of the Student Union is to promote students’ interests both locally and nationally. Every member has the opportunity to influence JYY’s activities, for example by submitting initiatives, voting in the Representative Council elections, applying for positions of trust, or taking part in the activities of Representative Council groups.
Board
The Board of Executives is appointed by the Representative Council, and it is responsible for the Student Union’s daily administration, advocacy work, and the preparation and implementation of decisions.
Representative Council
The Representative Council is JYY’s parliament, which makes decisions on the most important matters concerning the Student Union. Students choose 39 members of the Council every two years.
Student Representatives
A student representative in administration is part of the representative democracy at the University and represents themselves and their fellow students in the University’s decision-making.
Representative Council Elections
JYY’s Representative Council elections are held every two years, with the next elections scheduled for autumn 2027. Every member of the Student Union who is registered as present at the university is eligible to vote in these elections.
Any voting-eligible member of the Student Union may stand as a candidate in the Representative Council elections. However, candidates must have their attendance recorded at the University of Jyväskylä at least one week before the end of the nomination period.
Would you like to submit a member initiative?
Every JYY member can influence the student union’s activities by submitting an initiative to the Representative Council. Initiatives can be submitted by representatives of a Representative Council group, individual students, or student groups. Membership in the student union is required to submit an initiative. You can submit a initiative by sending it to the Executive Director via email at toiminnanjohtaja@jyy.fi. If you want your initiative to be considered at the next Representative Council meeting, it must be submitted at least eight (8) days before the meeting.
You can find a sample initiative here (PDF). The document is available only in Finnish.
