JYY’s business operations operate under the name Soihtu. Soihtu’s task is to provide services for students. By expanding the customer base of its business operations, Soihtu is able to provide essential services for students and ensure the conditions for the student union’s activities also in the future.
Soihtu is JYY’s business unit
The study period is a unique phase in a person’s life. Many face changes and new challenges, along with a new and exciting city to live in. Soihtu, part of the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä, takes care of people’s everyday basic needs: housing, community, and well-being.
Housing
Soihtu offers high-quality and affordable student housing in three locations: the Kortepohja Student Village, Korttelikylä, and Vehkakuja. In addition to electricity and internet, the rent for our apartments includes laundry shifts, shared sauna times, a gym, and several study and hobby spaces.
Reserveable event and meeting spaces
At Rentukka and Ilokivi, there are rentable meeting and event spaces that provide an inspiring setting for meetings, celebrations, and spending time together. You can easily make reservations through Soihtu’s online store.
Soihtu’s story
JYY began constructing the Kortepohja Student Village in the mid-1960s. The early years of construction were driven by a strong need to address the city’s shortage of student housing. Over the decades, the expanded operations developed into a business unit that is today known as Soihtu.

JYY owns a part of Semma Oy
JYY holds a 40% share in the restaurant business Semma Ltd. Semma serves university staff, city residents, and tourists alike through a total of 13 restaurants and cafés. Semma’s locations are situated on the University of Jyväskylä campus, at the Jyväskylä City Library, and in the Kortepohja Student Village.
