Membership and student card
The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä is the students’ own advocacy and service organization, which you join by paying the student union membership fee. As a student of the University of Jyväskylä, you can use either the Slicе digital student card or order a physical student card.
Membership and membership fee
All Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students at the University of Jyväskylä join JYY by paying the student union membership fee. All university students must register with the university at the beginning of each academic year between 1st of April and 31st of July. New students accept their study place and register according to the instructions they receive. Continuing degree students receive registration instructions by email, and for them, paying the membership fee and completing the registration are essentially the same process.
Registration is done through the OILI academic year registration service, where the student union membership fee is paid at the same time. More information about registration and membership fee instructions for the upcoming term can be found on the university’s website.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students pay the JYY membership fee either for the entire academic year or one semester at a time.
- Exchange students can choose whether or not to join JYY. By paying the membership fee, they gain access to all student benefits.
- For doctoral students, JYY’s membership is also optional. Their membership fee is lower, as they are not entitled to all student benefits. However, Slice discounts are the same for all members.
The table below shows the membership fees of JYY. The Finnish Student Health Service fee is no longer included in student union membership fee, so in addition to the JYY’s membership fee, higher education students must pay the FSHS fee to Kela twice a year. You can find more information about the FSHS fee from Kela’s webpage.

Obtaining a student card
The student card is the student union membership card and also an official way to prove student status. With a valid student card, students are entitled to benefits such as student-priced meals, public transport discounts, and services provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). As a student at the University of Jyväskylä, you can use either the Slice digital student card or order a physical student card. If you are a new student, you can start using the Slice student card from 1st of August.
Slice digital student card
With the Slice digital student card, you can access valuable student benefits through Finland’s largest student discount service. Slice also functions as an official student ID throughout Finland.
After joining JYY and once your right to study has begun, you can go to https://slice.fi/jyy to activate your account. After activation, you will receive your Slice login details by email. - After receiving your student card, you must collect the academic year sticker from the Ilokivi service point. The sticker is not given separately and will be attached directly to the card. When collecting your first academic year sticker, please bring a valid ID with you. The sticker can be collected starting from 1st of August.

Doctoral students
For students pursuing doctoral degrees at the University of Jyväskylä, membership in the student union is voluntary. However, JYY also advocates for the interests of doctoral students.
A doctoral student can join JYY by paying the membership fee with semester registration. The membership fee can also be paid after the registration period has ended (31st of July).
The membership fee is paid to the student union’s bank account FI30 1581 3000 0339 35 (BIC/SWIFT: NDEAFIHH) using the reference number 07922. A receipt of the payment must be sent to Student Services via this HelpJYU form.
The green student card for doctoral students differs slightly from the blue card used by undergraduate students. The following points are good to keep in mind, especially when transitioning from an undergraduate to a doctoral student:
- Doctoral students are not eligible for Matkahuolto discounts or Kela meal subsidies with their student card.
- NOTE: From 1st of January 2024 onwards, postgraduate students are also entitled to student-priced train tickets from VR. This requires a card that includes the VR logo.
A postgraduate student who has joined JYY as a member is entitled to the same JYY’s services as undergraduate students. Our postgraduate members can participate in JYY’s events and activities. In challenging situations, you can also make use of JYY’s member services and advisory services provided by our experts. As a JYY member, you also have the right to vote and stand as a candidate in student union elections.
Although postgraduate students are not entitled to the Kela meal subsidy, Ilokivi and Semma offer them the opportunity to enjoy more affordable lunches. In addition, a postgraduate student card provides access to largely the same student benefits as an undergraduate student card. A postgraduate student who is a member can also apply for student housing from Soihtu.
JYY also advocates for postgraduate students in education and social policy matters. A postgraduate student who is a member of JYY can, turn to JYY’s higher education policy specialist in cases of issues related to supervision of research work or the quality of education. If you have questions related to health, equality, non-discrimination or income, you can contact JYY’s social policy specialist. You can also share feedback or ideas with the specialists regarding advocacy for postgraduate students.
Many student rights also apply to postgraduate students, as the university’s degree regulations do not differentiate between degree students and postgraduate students in many situations. If you feel that your rights as a student have been violated, you can contact JYY’s specialists.
In addition, the Union of Research Professionals of Jyväskylä (Jytte) also advocates for the interests of early-career researchers in Jyväskylä.
A postgraduate student who is a member of JYY and not employed full-time by the university (less than 50% working time) or working on a grant may apply to become a student representative in university administration. As a student representative, you can take part in decision-making within the university community. More information about the role and application schedules is available here.
Postgraduate students as members of the Representative Council
A postgraduate student who is a member of JYY can stand as a candidate in JYY’s Representative Council elections, establish their own electoral group and serve as a member of the Representative Council.
