Heidi Rättyä, the candidate from the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä has been elected to the board of the National Union of University Students in Finland for 2019. The election took place at the National Union’s Congress on November 16-17th, 2018 in Otaniemi, Espoo.
23-year-old Rättyä studies English as her major at the University of Jyväskylä. She is minoring in Russian language and culture as well as pedagogical studies. Rättyä has served on JYY’s board for 2018, where her responsibilities have included education policy and international affairs.
“It feels great to continue working in advocacy on a national level after my year on the board of the Student Union. The ability to influence the elections and government programme make next year exceptionally important, and the student movement’s clout will be put to the test.”, said Rättyä.
Sanni Lehtinen of the Student Union of the University of Tampere has been elected chair of the board of the National Union. The other board members elected today are Titta Hiltunen of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, Helmi Andersson of the Student Union of Åbo Akademi University, Kim Kujala of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa, Suvi Vendelin of the Aalto University Student Union ja Roope Tukia of the Student Union of the University of Tampere.
The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) is a national association that represents about 132 000 students in Finland. All Finnish university student unions are members of the association. The Congress in Otaniemi elected next year’s board and decided on the Union’s political and financial strategies for 2019.
