Students’ wellbeing is the main prerequisite for smooth and high-quality studies. In addition to healthcare services, social networks, hobbies, sports and culture are essential elements in building student wellbeing. Both the city and the wellbeing services county are responsible for supporting and improving students’ wellbeing, as well as preventing health issues.

Students must have easy access to public healthcare.

FSHS and the wellbeing services county’s division of responsibility in healthcare must be clear to all parties, and the wellbeing services county shouldn’t automatically direct students to FSHS. Students must have easy access to both basic and specialized healthcare when needed. The wellbeing services county must invest in preventative work and offer low-threshold mental healthcare services to students, too. Customer fees cannot become a barrier for seeking treatment.

International students must be ensured healthcare that is of good quality, affordable and accessible in English.

International students must have easy access to basic healthcare services, including mental health services. The wellbeing services county must ensure that service guidance will be available also in English, and medical staff will have sufficient English language skills. Emergency and on-call services must be accessible in English as well. Ensuring public healthcare services are available in English is especially important for international exchange students, who are not entitled to FSHS’s services.

The city of Jyväskylä supports the development and directing of sports-, culture- and recreational services broadly to students.

Cultural services are a contributor to wellbeing just as sports services are. Thus, Jyväskylä must act according to its City of Culture –brand. The continuation of key cultural events, such as Yläkaupungin yö, must be ensured, and smaller cultural events and operators must be supported financially and by offering spaces for events. All levels of activity should be taken into consideration when developing sports services. The sports-, culture- and recreational services of Jyväskylä must be executed accessibly, and their student fees must be kept to a minimum. According to JYY’s survey regarding city cervices, more than half of the respondents would significantly decrease their use of sports- and cultural services, or even quit altogether, if student discounts were removed.
