
Putting the Cap on Minna
Finally, we get to put the cap on Minna in Kirkkopuisto! In keeping with tradition, we’ll get to hear the wonderful music of the University of Jyväskylä Wind Orchestra Puhkupillit and vappu speeches from the chair of the JYY Board and the chair of the JAMKO Board. The capping is free of charge.
You can get the stamps for Minnan matka near the Young Minna Canth statue on the Paraatiaukio side. Look for the table with the green tablecloth.
SCHEDULE
4:30 PM – Attendees can start arriving at the park
5:15 PM – Wind Orchestra Puhkupillit, 1st set
5:30 PM – Vappu speech by the Chair of the JAMKO Board
5:40 PM – Vappu speech by the Chair of the JYY Board
5:50 PM – Wind Orchestra Puhkupillit, 2nd set
6:00 PM – Minna receives her cap, at which point everyone is allowed to put on their caps
6:00 PM – Group sing-along of “Gaudeamus Igitur”
After the program, those who wish may join the procession departing from Paraatiaukio (the square next to Minna’s statue) and, while observing traffic rules, proceed to the Mattilanniemi beach to watch the engineering student initiation ceremony, which begins at 7:00 PM. The procession departs from Paraatiaukio at 6:20 PM.
IMPORTANT NOTES
– Please keep the park’s walkways and the sidewalks surrounding the park clear at all times during the event.
– You may bring your own food and snacks, but there is no space for picnics near the Minna statue
– Please remember to dispose of trash, empty cans, and bottles in the designated trash bags in the park.
– Security guards will be monitoring the park’s walkways and patrolling the crowd; they can assist you in case of emergencies or incidents of harassment. Security guards also serve as trusted persons at the event.
– The area is accessible, but we ask people with mobility impairments to position themselves along the edges of the sidewalks. The ground in the park may still be soft.

Harju Vappu Picnic
May Day is a time to relax. So, we’re gathering at Harju from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM for a group picnic. All higher education students and city residents are warmly welcome to join us!
Music will be playing, and you can get Minna’s travel stamps and overalls badges at the JYY and JAMKO tents, and you can even take a sauna at the top of Harju! Restrooms for picnic-goers are located on the 1st floor of the Harju Tower.
If you’d like to use the sauna, please note that you can change clothes in the public restrooms, but there are no shower facilities. Be sure to bring your own towel and swimwear.
The area reserved for the picnic is the slope leading from the Harju stairs (Nero stairs) toward the Normal School. The picnic is free of charge.
PLEASE NOTE
– The paths on Harju and the Harju stairs must be kept clear throughout the event. The Harju stairs are not part of the event area.
– No open fire.
– You may bring your own food and snacks. We recommend bringing a tarp or blankets!
– We will provide trash bags and bottle bags for picnic participants. Bottle bags can be returned to the JYY info tent at the end of the picnic if you don’t feel like taking them to a store. Please dispose of trash in the trash bins. Before leaving, make sure your spot is clean!
– Security guards will be monitoring the paths in the park and patrolling the crowd; they can assist you in case of emergencies or incidents of harassment. The security guards will also serve as equality officers during the event.
– The area is accessible, but we ask people with mobility impairments to use the Harju walkways. The ground on Harju may still be soft.
– People with mobility impairments can best access Harju via the walkway on the Normaalikoulu side.
