The Total Voting Percentage Decreased – Politically Unaffiliated Groups Keep Their Minor Majority

The voting percentage in the Student Union Council of Representatives Elections 2019 fell slightly compared to the last elections. A total of 3,373 people voted in the elections. The voting percentage was 27,93 % (28,96 % in the 2017 elections). Altogether 41 council members were elected to the council.

-The decrease in the voting percentage was a minor disappointment, but in the big picture, all the alliances have done remarkable work toward JYY’s visibility and student democracy. The elections were successful and I am excited for the new council to start its work for the student movement, commented Sanni Kupiainen, chair of the election committee.

P&D lost one seat, but retains the title of largest council group, with ten seats. The Green Students gained one seat for a total of eight and became the second biggest council group. The Union of Alvar received the third most seats, with a total of six.

Elma Hyöky of the Greens received 98 votes, more than any other candidate. Juho Neuvonen of the Students of the National Coalition Party received 78 votes and Milla Patrikainen of P&D received 73, the second and third most.

The new council will assemble at the Student Union Building Ilokivi on December 3rd, 2019. The meeting will be live streamed on JYY’s YouTube channel.
