Call for applications for positions on JYY’s Board of Executives for the year 2021

Call for applications for positions of trust for the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä for the year 2021 has started. We are accepting applications for the Chair and the members of the Board as well as for Chair of the Council and the Vice Chair of the Council.

JYY continues the call for applications until 29 November 2020.

Tasks and Responsibilities of the Board of Executives

The Board of Executives consists of 7-10 members and  is responsible for operative decision-making within JYY. The Board is led by the Chair of the Board of Executives. The Board also gives statements on matters concerning students, gives out grants for organizations and recruits employees for the Student Union.

The Council of Representatives has, by joint decision, instructed the negotiators to form a Board of Executives in which one person is appointed for each of the following sectors:

  • Chairperson of the Board
  • Associations
  • Cultural Affairs
  • Sustainable Development: Environmental Affairs and Development Cooperation
  • Financial Affairs and Corporate Relations
  • Communications
  • International Affairs
  • Academic Affairs
  • Social Affairs
  • Advocacy and Municipal Affairs

For 2020, a separate sector of responsibility will be appointed for each member of the Board. In addition, the board shares responsibilities for other tasks and projects. The current sectors and members of the Board can be found here. The final authoritative decision on the sectors be made by the 2021 Board at its inaugural meeting.

The action plan will be formally approved at the Council meeting on 17 November and it is recommended that applications to the positions are returned after that.

Tasks and Responsibilities of the Chair of the Council and the Vice Chair of the Council

The Student Union Council with 41 seats is the highest decision-making body. The Council typically meets once a month to decide on matters concerning the student union. The chairman of the Council coordinates the activities of the representative council together with the vice chairman of the Council.

Application Process, Board Negotiations and Selection

Any member of the Student Union can apply for a position of trust. The composition of the Board is decided by JYY’s Representative Council. Applicants must submit their curriculum vitae and application to Nella Heikinmäki, Chairman of the Council, on Sunday, 29 November 2020 at the latest. Applications and CV:s must be sent via e-mail to epj@jyy.fi.

If you are interested in applying to the Board, it is recommended that you contact one of the Representative Groups beforehand so that you have the opportunity to receive the support of the Representative Group in question in the Board negotiations.

The board negotiations will take place on 30 November 2020 at 4:00 pm at the Student House Ilokivi (Keskussairaalantie 2). Each representative group has a right to appoint two (2) negotiators. The negotiations begin with a public live event in which all people who have applied will be interviewed. A live Youtube stream of the interviews will be broadcasted. The video will not remain public after the interviews.

The final decisions will be made at the meeting of the Counci of Representatives on 1 December 2020. Meetings of the Council of Representatives are open to all members of the Student Union.

The elected people in the positions of trust will be introduced to their positions on December 7-11, 2020 and December 14-17, 2020, after which the orientations will resume in January, when the official Board year begins.

Chair of the Council Applicants

Applicants for the Chair of the Council of the Student Union must answer the following questions in their free-form application:

  • Brief introduction of the applicant.
  • Why are you the right person to the Chair the Council?
  • How would you, as the Chair of the Council of Representatives, make JYY’s activities and decision-making more visible?
  • The focus of JYY’s next year’s strategy is influentiality. How would you contribute to this goal as the Chair of the Council?

In addition to the above, be prepared to give a speech lasting no more than three minutes for the opening ceremonies of the University of Jyväskylä’s academic year 2021-2022.

Chair of the Board Applicants

Applicants for the Chair of the Board of Executives of the Student Union must answer the following questions in their free-form application:

  • Brief introduction of the applicant.
  • What motivates you to apply for the position of Chairman of the Board of JYY?
  • Describe what strengths and weaknesses you have as a leader.
  • How would you motivate your team to achieve the goals set for board work?
  • List 2-3 concrete things that should be improved in JYY. How would you improve these things as the Chair of the Board?
  • The focus of JYY’s next year’s strategy is influentiality. How would you contribute to this goal as the Chair of the Board?

Members of the Board Applicants

Applicants for the member of the Board of Executives of the Student Union must answer the following questions in their free-form application (emphasize in the answers the sectors you are applying for):

  • Brief introduction of the applicant.
  • What motivates you to apply as a member of the Board of JYY?
  • Which sectors are you primarily applying for? Which sectors are you secondarily applying for? (Note that each board member will be responsible for one sector, but you can apply for multiple sectors.) List a maximum of two specific things about the sectors you are primarily applying for in relation to what new or important you plan to bring to the operation of the sectors during your year in government. In your answer take also in account the focus of JYY’s next year’s strategy and  the relationship between JYY and its cooperative partners.
  • During the year in the Board, you will cooperate a lot with other board members and other people. How would you describe yourself as a team player and as a board member?
  • Which 2021 action plan projects interest you the most and what do you hope to achieve in terms of the project. (The action plans will be finalized on Council meeting 17 November 2020.)
