JYY nominates Jenni Suutari for President of the National Union of University Students in Finland

The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY) nominates Jenni Suutari for President of the National Union of University Students (SYL) in Finland for 2024. JYY’s Representatives’ Council nominated Suutari in its meeting on September 13th 2023.

Jenni Suutari is currently studying political science. In 2023 she has been a member of SYL’s board, overlooking education policy. Previoulsy, she was also Vice Chair of the Board of JYY in 2022.

As the President of SYL, Suutari wants to fight for more accessible education and good student life for all together with the entire student movement.

“I’m very grateful to my home Student Union for their support. As President, I want to focus on working closely together with Student Unions, because that is a prerequisite for influential and innovative advocacy work”, Suutari says.

“Many of the measures in the government program, such as cuts to housing benefits, pose a big advocacy challenge for SYL next year. I’m ready to take on that challenge. The building blocks of good student life – a good livelihood, affordable housing, free education and good ability to study – need to be returned to their place”, Suutari continues.

“JYY is proud to nominate Jenni for the President of SYL’s board. Both in the Student Union and in SYL, Jenni has demonstrated versatile skills in student politics. She’s a solid professional in student politics who knows how influential student advocacy is led and done”, says the Chair of the Student Union Arttu Laaksonen.

The Presidents and Board of SYL for 2024 are selected in the general assembly on November 17-18 in Tampere.
