Every spring, the student community gathers to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of public education in Finland with interdisciplinary anniversary sitsfest and an anniversary gala.
Annual celebration of JYY
The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä celebrates its anniversary annually on March 24 in commemoration of the founding of public education in Finland. The anniversary celebrations bring together students, organization representatives, partners, and invited guests to celebrate JYY’s long and diverse history. JYY’s anniversary celebrations consist of traditional interdisciplinary events that combine academic traditions, a sense of community, and the celebration of student life. The celebrations include both more casual anniversary sitsit parties and a more formal anniversary gala.
Anniversary sitsfest
The anniversary sitsfest is open to all JYY members as well as invited guests, and no prior experience with sitsfest is necessary. During the event, participants sing traditional sitsfest songs and celebrate the anniversary of the Student Union in a relaxed atmosphere. The anniversary sitsfest is hosted by the chairpersons of JYY’s Representative Council, who serve as toastmasters. They guide the evening’s activities, ensuring that everyone can follow the customs of sitsfest culture.
The songbook used at the anniversary sitsfest is JYY’s interdisciplinary songbook, JYYPOS. This book includes song lyrics, a sample program structure, key sitsfest terminology, and practical tips. You are warmly invited to attend the anniversary sitsfest, even if you have no prior experience with academic table festivities. The toastmasters and fellow participants will introduce you to JYY’s sitsfest culture, ensuring that you feel comfortable and enjoy the evening.
Annual gala
The Annual Gala is an elegant evening event celebrating JYY’s long history and traditions. The programme includes a buffet dinner, the singing of traditional sitsfest songs, speeches and greetings, as well as live music. After the Annual Gala, the celebration continues with a more informal after-party. Following the Annual Gala, the celebration continues with a more informal after-party. Etiquette and dress code
The Annual Gala is a prestigious academic celebration. The dress code for the event is a dark suit and academic badges of honour. The dress code honours the traditions of the Student Union and the festive nature of the occasion.
